Breed Specific Grooming: How to Care for Your Dog's Coat Based on Its Type

Different dog breeds require completely different grooming routines. Learn how to care for your dog's specific coat type, from double-coats to curly hair.

Breed Specific Grooming: How to Care for Your Dog's Coat Based on Its Type

Every dog is unique, and so is their coat! A grooming routine that works wonders for a Golden Retriever might completely ruin the coat of a Poodle. Understanding breed-specific grooming is essential to keeping your furry friend’s skin healthy and their coat shining.

At Pamper Paws, our mobile grooming experts have seen it all. We’ve put together this comprehensive guide on how to care for your dog’s coat based on its specific type.

The 5 Main Types of Dog Coats

Dog coats generally fall into five distinct categories. Identifying which category your dog belongs to is the first step in creating a healthy grooming routine.

1. Double-Coated Breeds

Examples: Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Siberian Huskies, Pomeranians.

Double-coated dogs have a soft, dense undercoat for insulation and a tougher topcoat to repel water and dirt.

  • Grooming Needs: These breeds “blow” their coat (shed heavily) twice a year. They require frequent brushing with an undercoat rake and slicker brush.
  • Crucial Warning: Never shave a double-coated dog! Shaving destroys the natural insulation mechanism, making them vulnerable to heatstroke in summer and freezing in winter. The coat may never grow back correctly.

2. Curly & Wavy Coated Breeds

Examples: Poodles, Bichon Frises, Doodles.

These coats are often hypoallergenic and don’t shed much, but they require the most high-maintenance grooming.

  • Grooming Needs: Curly coats mat instantly if not brushed daily. They require a pin brush and a metal comb to get all the way down to the skin. Professional haircuts are required every 4–6 weeks to keep the curls manageable.

3. Smooth & Short-Coated Breeds

Examples: Pugs, Beagles, Boxers, Dobermans.

These coats are short, lie flat against the body, and are relatively low maintenance.

  • Grooming Needs: While they don’t need haircuts, many short-coated dogs shed profusely (looking at you, Pugs!). A rubber curry brush or a hound glove used weekly helps remove dead hair and distribute natural skin oils.

4. Wire-Haired Breeds

Examples: Schnauzers, Wire Fox Terriers, Scottish Terriers.

These dogs have a rough, bristly outer coat and a soft undercoat.

  • Grooming Needs: To maintain the traditional harsh texture, wire coats require a specialized technique called “hand-stripping” (plucking dead hairs by hand). If you choose to clip the coat instead, it will become softer and lose its wiry texture permanently.

5. Long & Silky Coated Breeds

Examples: Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzus, Afghan Hounds.

These coats grow continuously, almost like human hair, and lack a thick undercoat.

  • Grooming Needs: Daily brushing is mandatory to prevent severe matting. They also require more frequent bathing than other breeds because dirt and grease easily weigh down silky hair. Regular trims are needed to keep the hair out of their eyes and off the ground.

Why Professional Breed-Specific Grooming Matters

Different coats require different tools, shampoos, and techniques. Using the wrong brush on a silky coat can cause breakage, while using a standard shampoo on a harsh wire coat can ruin its texture.

Our mobile van groomers at Pamper Paws are trained in breed-specific standard cuts and use customized premium products tailored exactly to your dog’s DNA.
