Wire Haired Dachshund Grooming: Hand Stripping and Care

Wire haired dachshunds have a harsh coat that needs special care. Learn what hand stripping is, how often to groom, and how to bathe and protect their back.

Wire Haired Dachshund Grooming: Hand Stripping and Care

Of the three dachshund coat types, the wire haired dachshund is the one that surprises new owners the most. The coat is rough and bristly, with a soft undercoat, bushy eyebrows and a beard. It does not shed like a smooth coated dachshund, and it does not tangle like a long haired one. It needs its own routine.

If you are comparing coat types, our general dachshund grooming tips cover all three. This guide goes deeper on the wire haired coat.

What makes the wire haired coat different?

The wire haired coat has two layers:

  • A harsh outer coat that sheds dirt and water well.
  • A soft, dense undercoat that gives warmth.

Because of this structure, the coat looks and feels best when the dead outer hair is removed correctly. When it is simply clipped with a blade, the harsh hair gets cut off and the soft undercoat becomes more visible. The dog can look softer, fluffier and a little paler in colour over time.

What is hand stripping?

Hand stripping means pulling out the dead outer hairs by hand or with a stripping knife, rather than cutting them. It keeps the coat texture crisp, helps the colour stay rich and encourages healthy new growth.

Points to know:

  • It is a specialist skill. Done badly it can irritate the skin. Always ask the groomer about their experience.
  • It is usually done a few times a year. Many owners strip the coat roughly every 3 to 4 months. Your groomer will check the coat and tell you when it is ready.
  • It is not always painless for every dog. Dogs that are used to it from a young age tolerate it best.
  • It is optional for pet dogs. A neat clipped coat is a perfectly healthy choice for a family pet. The texture will be softer, but the dog will be comfortable.

A simple routine between grooming sessions

TaskHow often
Brushing with a slicker or firm bristle brush1 to 2 times a week
Beard and eyebrow check and wipeDaily, after meals
Ear check and cleaningWeekly
Bath with a mild dog shampooAbout every 4 to 6 weeks
Nail trimEvery 3 to 4 weeks
Hair between the paw padsEvery 4 to 6 weeks

Do not bathe too often. Frequent baths can soften the coat and dry the skin.

Protect the back

All dachshunds have long spines, and grooming should always take that into account.

  • Support the chest and hind legs when lifting. Never lift by the front legs or the middle only.
  • Avoid long sessions standing on hind legs or jumping on and off tables.
  • Use a non slip mat on the grooming surface.
  • Stop at any sign of pain, such as shaking, yelping or reluctance to move, and speak to your vet.

Common coat problems

  • Itching or dandruff: Often caused by dry air, too much bathing or an allergy. Check with your vet if it continues.
  • Matting in the beard or leg furnishings: Comb daily and trim neatly.
  • A coat that has turned soft and pale: This is usually from repeated clipping. Hand stripping or a change in routine can help, but it takes time to improve.
